Stroll through winding cobblestone lanes and vibrant walls in a timeless village, where every corner turns its gaze toward the Eastern
COME BACK
This Urban Trekking itinerary blends art, spirituality, and historical memory, offering an immersive journey through Piana degli Albanesi in all its shades: a place where East meets West, traditions are renewed, and every stone tells a story.
The route begins at the central Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, the heart of Piana degli Albanesi, overlooking the old Town Hall, now the “Giuseppe Schirò” Library, the Sanctuary of Maria Odigitria, the Tre Cannoli fountain, and, slightly tucked away, the Church of San Giorgio Megalomartire.
From this square, simply by looking around, one immediately senses the cultural identity of this community, which for centuries has preserved the Arbëreshë language and traditions.
Leaving the square, winding side streets lead to the Sheshi district, one of the oldest parts of the Arbëresh village. Here, the urban layout still reflects a design in harmony with the terrain: no straight roads, houses following the natural contours of the land, often built upon rocky foundations.
It’s a fascinating urban labyrinth where time seems to have stood still. Stone staircases, sometimes carved directly from rock, connect different levels of the district, forming open spaces that once served as meeting points for conversation and social gatherings before residents returned to their homes or set out early in the morning for the fields.
Today, the clatter of mule hooves and children’s voices has faded, replaced by the quiet that defines spaces requiring adaptation to even the harshness of daily life. Vehicles cannot reach the doorstep, and scooters cannot roam freely here. The slow, steady pace of human footsteps still reigns supreme.
In recent years, the tenacious and creative efforts of a local association have transformed the Sheshi district into an Open-Air Museum. Giant murals, sculptural works, and wrought iron installations tell the story of the community through an artistic journey that grows year by year. References to Piana degli Albanesi’s ancient and recent history, reinterpretations of religious themes, and the craft of artisans blend together in a thread that has made this town unique from its surroundings since its origins.
After exploring Sheshi, the route continues to the majestic Cathedral of San Demetrio Megalomartire, the spiritual heart of the Italo-Albanian Byzantine community. Inside, the mystical atmosphere is heightened by the finely decorated iconostasis, gilded icons, and the fragrant incense generously used in every liturgy.
The guided visit, with insights into the Byzantine rite and Christian symbolism, allows visitors to appreciate the depth of Byzantine spirituality and the expressive power of sacred imagery.
On the way back to the square, a stop at the Church of San Giorgio Megalomartire is well worth it — another gem of Byzantine art and an important religious landmark for the local community.
The itinerary concludes with a visit to the Nicola Barbato Civic Museum, dedicated to the renowned physician and socialist politician from Piana degli Albanesi, a key figure in the Sicilian Workers’ Fasci movement. The museum preserves documents, photographs, and artifacts that tell the social and political history of the region, offering a captivating journey into the collective memory and civic engagement of the Arbëreshë community.
