The central area of the Serre della Pizzuta – Argomezi
COME BACK
Dense forests. Caves. Open spaces offering breathtaking panoramas. And shelters that testify to ancient human presence in these mountains.
The "Serre della Pizzuta" Nature Reserve covers a portion of land between the towns of Altofonte and Piana degli Albanesi, part of the Monti di Palermo mountain system, whose highest peak is Monte Pizzuta (1,333 m / 4,373 ft). Of particular interest for its karst formations, the reserve is rich in caves and underground cavities, which led to its official protection at the end of the 1990s.
Our route begins on the forest road branching from SP 5, ascending for a few hundred meters to reach the reserve entrance at Argomezi Woods.
Entering the reserve, a mixed oak and conifer forest will welcome us, accompanying us for almost the entire journey.
The first notable point along the trail is the crossroads with the Itinerarium Rosaliæ, which we follow until reaching Magazzino Argomezi, where we will take a short break.
From there, we continue into the forest toward Sorgente Villano, reaching another scenic viewpoint along the Carpineto ridge at the edge of the reserve. We then head toward Portella del Garrone, walking almost entirely along the ridge.
At Portella del Garrone, we can explore a World War II bunker and, with care, the Garrone's Cave. On our way back, we stop near the equipped area at Norina's House for lunch.
Finally, we return toward Magazzino Argomezi, taking a trail that in just over a kilometer brings us out of the reserve to our starting point.
Itinerary: Argomezi Woods – Crossroads – Magazzino Argomezi – Sorgente Villano – Portella del Garrone – Garrone' Cave – Norina's house – Magazzino Argomezi
